The title says it all, How do Free Hosts make money? All i know is that they have Google Adsense on their clients sites or their self's. However, would that really make enough? Are there any other ways?

well, all I know is the ads!
also, some companies do it for making themselves famous!
and after they got trusted, they start paid hosting, and people will buy from them as they trust them...

Well Most providers use PPC ads on members pages or ask to post in providers forum in return. Some earn by links they put on members pages. Few years ago it was pop ups and banner ads.

You could develop your free hosting site to be very popular then sell it for a nice profit.

Most of the FREE companies make money from providing you access to your DBs and BANDWIDTH!! The good free ones anyways!!

Well, I have another reason.
as I will start a free hosting program soon(not all websites are accepted) I want to share a little space to those who cannot afford buying web hosting and have great ideas for creating great websites!
also, I may not fill my whole space I have to sell, so why I dont share it?
and when their website got famous and under their website, there be a link saying: hosted by ... I will get famous too.
then it will have benefit for both of us.
Also, this way you may get pagerank too, so your website comes in the front of you when you search...

Some also do it as what is called a loss leader. You allow for free hosting, paying the bandwidth and then have plans that they can upgrade to that cost when their site gets popular. Also, as was said below there are the ads, etc, as well.

As far as letting friends, etc, have the excess bandwidth, that's cool, but keep in mind, that there will be customer support issues at times that will drive you crazy. :)

they started with sponsors, and they either put forced ads in your hosting plan or inside the cpanel, or nowadays they require you to have at least min. number of forum posts to get a certain hosting package.
