Hello to everyone

Let me start by saying I am a complete novice (and I mean complete) when it comes to building a WEB site.

I am not certain which path to take but the bottom line is I need a WEB presence one way or another, and I would prefer to have control rather than through a third party.

The UK recession is about to leave its mark on me, after 31 years with Sharp Electronics, doing everything from support, to product development to pre sales I have to move on.
This has given me the opportunity to start up a business.

I would like to create a WEB site and hope that this forum and the kind folk who post will offer me some helpful advice.

My first question is a bit vague...How do you think I should start, if I wanted to create something without spending too much money, for example I have seen some free software on this forum.

Go easy on me guys I don’t think I can take another rejection just yet;-)

Well i was in your shoes 12 months ago and honestly, i think get the site initially built for you. It is just too hard for a newbie that has no experience.

I would also keep it nice, simple and basic, nothing flash, but a good footing. Everything needs a good footing, without good footings, buildings fall down.

Stuff like seo takes time, but is easily learnt and will come to you, so thats no problem.

One final word of advice, get a domain name that you like, a dediacted name and not a name through a "build your site" like AOL or homestead had. Many close down and then your site is gone, the seo is gone and hours, months or years have gone too.

Think......Read.......Think & Read.

Hope these tips from one newbie to another, help in some small way.

Cheers.

Thanks Snooks for your advice, however I wanted to develop my own for two reasons:
1. So I had the complete flexibility to change whenever I wanted to without having to go through the programmer company.
2. To learn something to help my kid with.
I visited your site and I will probably go to something like this once my business has generated some money (fingers crossed).
My WEB site is not complete yet, as I don't leave work until May 2009, but I will continue to learn from all the informative posts here.
Thanks

Lets start with the free stuff:

Website - take a look at wordpress. Its lightweight, easy on the server, has tons of plug-ins and is secure.

Forum - I recommend MYBB. Its free. If your looking for a commercial grade forum solution, then its VBulletin.

You will have to take some professional help for proficiency in your work at a later stage. Now, for web presence the process starts from on-page optimization and then the whole process and focus is shifted to off-page.
Now, if you do the process of on-page optimization well, then the on-page process becomes much easier. Also, the basis of any SEO is perfection in keyword research and also identifying, working and not deviating from your targeted keywords.

If you have your site's on-page done perfectly, then you can afford to spend less on your off-page which will finally help in your site's web presence. And the most important thing in SEO, have patience. Without patience, you will go nowhere.
Working in this way with some quality paid links at a later stage for some long term permanent effect, your site can climb up high in SERPs.

I was like you few years before. I was completely new this kinda stuff. I got a dreamweaver and free template, but had no idea on how to use them. I then started going through tutorials. After that I had to develop the content.

It took for me to develop a site of 25 pages, more than 3 weeks. Then I had no idea on how and where to start SEO. I started googling it and got some ideas. I stated implementing all the techniques on my site and now I own 3 sites and offer these services.

"Take a chance" you will learn it.
