how do you guys normally attract visitors

and if you have a forum, what are the qualities in which u look for to make moderators, etc/?

we attract people by word of mouth, also been a long time member of other forums as well so i either invite people i know and/or incentivize them to join

Its same as seo a web site. you have to promote the everywhere you can. people can come in various ways , search engines, other forums etc.

Social Bookmarks should as well help to bring some traffic. If the features in the forum are good you can expect some visitors to become loyal ones.

It also depends on the type and content of the site. Word of mouth is very effective for sites like social networking. Tell few friends who will in turn tell aothers...bum....you see influx of members. If you have college friends, tell them and they will share your site URL with their friends.
