my style includes
meaning full comments on simmilar blogs
use of social bookmarking service specially - delicious, stumbleupon, digg, magnolia and redit
plus forum signatures and mail signatures.

Seo firm can definately help but only upto the extent of driving traffic to your site (it's mainly one time) but quality content is also one stuff which speaks on its own.
Besides online advertisements methods as i already state one more powerful media is social networking sites, and by mouth publicity.

for me all these efforts have brought traffic as well as a lot of regular visitors.

Signatures are the way to go :) That's really how you get backlinks. That or find a friend who makes tons of blog posts :D My friend mgccl has my site on each post of his blog and from that alone I got a good 1000 backlinks, which really surprised me when I checked the other day :) I expected maybe 10 or 15 but I had a whole lot more than that :D
