Default Templates or not?

I know this might have been asked before, but i just want to ask:
What do you think is better:
Using a free/paid template that probably many people already have, or making your own, mostly a very simple design, but still your own and unique website?

I guess a unique template is always the best but depending on the script or project, a free template can be great!!

That's my opinion anyways!!

I don't have an issue with either and have had SEO success with both. I do think if you want to look unique and still use a premade one, that a simple design is the best, one that can be easily editted to look completely different. Browse through some of the design uses on oswd.org and see how they did it. Some are unrecognizable from their originals. There are some pay ones that are pretty complicated and hard to change, and thus wind up looking like the 40 other sites that bought them.

If you plan to sell the site later on, it might be better to start with a unique website, as some buyers prefer these to the premade ones so as there is are no issues that may come up.

Just some thoughts

If you do use a template, customize it a bit. Even something as simple as a color change, a custom logo, or rearranging items on the page to make your site unique goes a long way to making your site and product(if you are selling one) stand out.

Getting a unique template is still the best choice out there, but if you are on a tight budget a free template is a must.
