They are both excellent sources I agree but the difference is that directories can offer many more indexed pages, and a good social network can Buzz you by being in certain traffic groups as well as member Vote rushes can place you on the homepage of some of these powerful sites like BlinkList and others.

Either way they are both very beneficial to be in!

I feel that social bookmarking sites gets indexed faster than most directories. I guess it's because many social bookmarking sites have high pr.

You are right, but also they also have more frequent traffic and content adds which draw the search spiders quicker than a directory but the directories are powerful when it comes to good links I feel.

When there is new content introduced in a site, the search engines want to know about it!

The procedure for book markings and directory submission is same ......
Both contains title ,url and description of blogs......
The difference between them is that an account must be created in the book marking site for the book marking of blogs and for directory submission their is no need to create an account at the respective site...
and both are easy.....

They are both important factors in SEO..

I can say, social bookmarking is primarily used for generating more traffic for your site because most of them use nofollow tags, while web directories are mainly used for gaining more backlinks for your site...

I don't think that loves directory link more than social bookmarks. Directory links are taken as spam these days by search engines. Social bookmarks are equally important as back links as well.So, I think people should not overrate directory links.
