Default Question - will posting to junk directories hurt a site?

I've got an interesting situation with a new client who works in a very competitive industry (laser hair removal). It appears a competitor has been posting his site to a bunch of junk link directories and link farms, probably with the goal of hurting the search engine results.

From what I've been taught it is impossible for a competitor to hurt a site by posting to other sites. Is that still true? I guess it must be or it would be a very common practice.

Any ideas or comments?

Moved to the appropriate section.

I have found that the term "JUNK" as far as a directory goes only applies if they allow nudity type sites in.

I believe that some directories are stronger than others but they are still the #1 source for gaining term position and in a lot of cases....PR

Directories kind of got a bad name for a bit because Google was blasting them left and right but people now know why that happened and it wasn't the fact that it was a directory,...it was what the directroy owners were doing with their directories to promote them and to gain PR!

Anything that's beyond your control will not hurt you, only when you link something back to in your own site will it hurt you in the rankings
