When bid directories first came out a few years ago people made I was a big fan but I am curious to know what people think about them now?

Yes, They all are still good.
Dont know but the only problem with Biding directories isnot giving PR to those directories.
i checked lot of bidding directory sites and notice this, and i think this is the reason that people not paying for this type of directory where directory not have PR.
and if we talk SEO wise then they are the still best option IMHO if bidding directory in good webmaster hand even if they have pr0.
maximum biding directories accepting links by paying 1$ and in 1$ you will get 1 link to your home page + 5 Deeplinks. {it is really very cheap :P}
