I think the problem goes with new members who just post away for the sake of their sigs. Why don't you re-classify the members and revise your rules on signatures? That might help don't you think?

And please check from time to time on the new members. Scrutinize their IPs one by one. You might miss the same spammers changing their usernames, thus having double accounts.

Just my two cents anyway.
1. There are 3 here that are pretty active in fighting Spam currently but as we grow, we need more people.

They are in different timezones so it works out pretty good I think. Someone usually sees the Spam coming in but it does slip from all of us once in awhile.

2. New members are a problem I totally agree but you really have to let them go for a bit and see what they do because if you BAnned on feeling then there may be some great members being taken down such as Hotelsex for instance which is a new member and an awesome one at that but the member name may have thrown a moderator.

I know that we are not 100 percent clean but we will continue the fight to make a nice community to the best of our abilities!

You are an excellent member as well BTW and I know that you have a real eye for this stuff as we have seen for months and I really appreciate that!

I hope to talk more about this with you soon.....hint hint!

Great Post!

Acceptable and might be a reason for you to invite some good members to take a mod position. Thus, forum assignments would help rather than all of you taking the super mod task. ;)

Compared to a lot of forums I belong to, admin and mod, Dev Hunters is quite tame when it comes to spam and members who put links in all their posts.

The mods here do their job well.

And hint, hint, and another hint....
D3niss3 would make a great mod!

Spam in here is minimal to the other few places that i visit.

The people are also way friendlier, nicer to talk to and certainly more helpful.

Im learning a lot, simply by lurking around and reading the threads....sometimes you learn more when you keep your mouth shut and just read :) I should have learnt that years ago (LOL)

Well, I think 90 % of people are here only for signature link. SO what can we say.

Spam has slowed quite a bit over the past few weeks - personally, I come in here numerous times day and night gleaning over every post, not only removing Spam but Banning many who don't obey the FORUM RULES and I don't play childish games with those who think they're sneaking something past us!

Guess that's what they get when coming across this Former U.S. Marine, who's always obeyed orders and "Rules Of Engagement", serving as one of several Moderators here - Spammers suddenly find themselves Bee-Atch Slapped and gone ... no questions asked.

If this forum does not have it installed, maybe consider the "Stop Forum Spam" modification. Between ReCaptcha and the Stop Forum Spam mod, about 99% of the spam will stop.

You get a funner job. Once you have the Stop Forum Spam modification installed, create yourself an account at the SFS site. Then you can report spammers and stop them from being able to sign up on other sites.

So far, I have added 47 spammers to the stop forum spam system.

In essence, you will be joining an army of forum admins working together to stop forum spam.

What is to stop people from going to that site and just start entering information on you, me, other legit forum posters?

To report a spammer to the Stop Forum Spam site, you need 4 things:

Username the spammer signed up with on the forum
Spammer IP address
Spammer Email address
Be a member of the stop forum spam site and get your key

Lets say you get listed as a spammer, you can file a dispute with the stop forum spam site. I hear about it every once in awhile. Someone will get an ip address that a spammer once had. They just file a dispute with the SFS site, and get it resolved.

Also, they keep track of how often a spammer gets reported. If an ip address has no reports in 6 months, the SFS site will say so.

In the first week that I had the modification installed, it blocked something like 600 spammers that tried to register.

Overall, its probably the best system you can have installed to block spammers. Spam protection has to be layered, just like all other types of security.

Stop Forum Spam Modification
ReCaptha
Email verification

With those three items, my forum might get 2 or 3 spammers a month.
