SEO can harm if not done the way it shpuld be done. There are a set of guidelines laid down by in order to have the webmasters around the world follow some steps to legitimate SEO. If done properly, then it can do wonders to your rankings, but if played with can lead to the ultimate thing of your site being banned fro the SERPs.
