Content and links are both necessary for Competitive search engine marketing efforts. Think what will happen if you create great content and no one knows about it to link to it. That's why a combination of content and link building will perform better for your site. Google gives more importance to the "natural links" but it is not possible without good contents and on another hand

rank the website on the bases of back links which is not possible untill we try for some quality links. An unique and interesting content with some quality back links will boost your ranking in all search engines.

they don't beat it's other, but are complements to each other, no one will link to your site if you don't have any content.

Both of them are necessary but one should put more weight in unique content. If your content is not unique, all the efforts of link building would go wasted.

like i said they compliment each other, after creation of content, that's the first step and second step is to promote/link with each other/request linkback or link exchange on forums, you can also comment on blogs from time to time make sure there's something resourceful/useful/helpful to post and add a one liner link to your web content.

Both should go hand in hand. Create unique content and quickly start building th e links. This will also keep in check the copying of the content.

I agree with what has been said below. They both compliment eachother and make for a quality site and experience for the visitors. I have to ask, what is Social Media Optimization? I haven't heard that one before.

I think you need both to get traffic. But i would give more weight to link building than content. But it doesn't mean content is not important of couse without good content site would expand after a limit

well rumer's say that now

will be looking for fresh content and PR will have less role to play, in that case the content its relavency adn its freshnes is what is going to matter the most.

As everyone said both links and contents are equally important. If you do not have links your content will not be discovered and if you do not have content your links will not matter. First have some basic contents and then you have to work on updating your contents regularly and building your links too.

Links get you ranked, content get you conversions. Good site content means you will get good links, easier and better results, you can attain backlinks easily once you have good content.

I never have been able to advertise my sites well... I never really realized until a few months ago that you needed backlinks so much, but now that I know, I'm getting as many as I can :)
