I think content is much more important becuase only link doesn't mean anything.
If you have content, no link, it would be at least meaningful but not enough sure.

I think both of them should be complement with each other.. Having a great content is really important and to make this content more accessible to visitors, you also need to have links for having some referral...

Content is the way to go. No doubt about that. Links are like the chocolate syrup on top of icecream. Very good to have, VERY, but not essential to me.

in my opinion link building is more important. even if you dont have unique content you will be getting readers

These two should work hand and hand. a good website requires a good content as well as good link building. For a site to rank well on search engines it requires continuous optimization.
