It depends on what kinda traffic you are looking for. Just traffic or quality traffic and whether you want one time traffic or repeat visitors etc.

it basically will depend on what niche/category your site is in, if it's a forum then promote it in forums, if it's social network or date site promote it in same niche, also do some little seo and the best is do it in a community/forum where's there is a same interest on it.

There are a handful of places guaranteeing visitors, for example visitor exchanges. These are basically useless because all the visitors are incentivised and will never return. You need visitors illegitimately interested in your site meaning you have to provide something interesting or useful. Also, one of the biggest turn-offs for me when visiting a new site, is an ugly or unprofessional looking website. You should learn some design and coding or hire a developer to make your site if you are serious about promoting it.

I used to do the following to gain traffic:

Write articles on your topic (your site's topic) and submit to article submission sites
Join to Social Bookmarking Sites and submit your site
Write a Press Release about your product/services and submit to Free PR Submission sites
Register and join forums with the same topic/niche

But that doesn't stop there, you should work it out. After 4 to 6 weeks, you would notice that you'll get higher traffic and at the same time you'll gain link popularity.

Just concentrate on the basics first. Like unique content, lots of quality backlinks, social bookmarking sites, signature links etc etc. Meanwhile read advance SEO articles from sites like seochat.com to know more about the whole SEO thing.

To improve the more traffic you have to use a site map,Create a FAQ, Link to related posts, Include links to your most popular posts, on your sidebar Write a series of posts, Do a weekly or monthly summary, Place links on your 404 pages, Include links in your footer. I think these are enough to improve traffic on to a site
