Getting your site in dmoz directory doesn't mean much for search engines anymore. there are tons of sites there and it makes no big difference for seo if your site is their or not.

It is probably necessary for really populated keywords, but sites still manage to find ways to get highly listed without it. I've never been able to get a site in there.

Dmoz is very powerful no doubt but there are many other more effective ways to accomplish terms!!!

if your site can get in that is, they have different editor levels there btw, if your site is not that good in design and content is not that unique, level 1 editor will reject it.

Well Dmoz was soo important when Google d used that to check the site quality but not anymore. Most categories has no editors or take ages to get listed. Its not anymore a must in SEO.

If you can get in that's great, but don't sweat it if not. In some ways it's like a country club. Many people talk about the fact that the editors abuse their positions of power and only let in friends or people they know. One guy even tried to auction off his editorship position on eBay! They're not the cleanest operation in the world.

Actually it is difficult to be an editor to that directory... And the scam that happened is very bad... Paying for $5,000 just to get the site included?? Hmmm.. Awful news....
