Hi there!
I've never had any formal training on web design and I have a freelance photography business which will require my own website. I can employ external help but actually keen to build the site myself from scratch - kinda like my own little project. Can anyone recommend any good online resource and programs (preferrably free or cheap? and Mac-compatiable?) for a newbie?

You will need PhotoShop 100% and a program to open files locally such as Dremweaver or similar, and with those two tools you could build about anything give or take some flash goodies.
There are many other programs to build websites but PhotoShop is a must! Tutorials?? I'm sure that you could get the advice you need here but there are many videos on Youtube on the different aspects of web design, we have a few in our video tutorials section here.
