Free is still the best option out there but will take sometime. Going the paid route will be quicker.

Paid directories are good to get links in a short time but still we have to select the good directories to get quality links.

Good free sources to me right now are social bookmarks which are very powerful such as www.blurpalicious.com and others!! Try it!!

i would still go for free route like bookmarking web sites and signatures etc.

Agreed, if you want to market your sites then list all the area's of where you can advertise, prepare each one then advertise all on the same day ;)
