Exclamation Does Google look at dates of links?

I couldn't think how to phrase the question.

Does Google look at dates of links?
-
What I mean is, are 'old' links as valuable as 'new' links?

Having built up several thousand links to my guitar store over the past 6 months, can I rest on my laurels? i.e. will those links be as powerful in SERPS terms in a year's time as they are now, or does Google downgrade their value over time. Will a thousand 3-year-old links give the same SERPS as a thousand 3-month-old links?

I guess I'm asking about 'currency' - do links have to be current to be most valuable? I've never seen this mentioned, but have a gut feeling that the fact that someone linked to your site 3 years ago would not be regarded as highly as someone linking to your site last week.

Any thoughts??

I believe that age does not matter. I believe that fresh content on the pages that you are linked to does!

It is just like directories that just sit there and do NOTHING!!

phpLD directory scripts for instance introduced content sections on their homepage as well as the categories so that you can change the content every once in awhile to freshen up the SERP reading.

Is that what you mean?

I don't think so. But I think Google does give weight on the age of the domain names. Am I correct in saying this?

It is a fact that a link will gain strength from when it is first added to a site. I think old links show stability and thats why old sites are favored by G. Content should come from other sources add a blog to your site and update daily. The problem with old links is they if reciprocal they may drop the link and so you have a link to nowhere. Do updates on your site and delete if no longer linking.

Analytics is good for this because it tells you what sites are sending traffic. If a site doesn't send any traffic at all (0, not just a little) in a month or more, there is a good chance they dropped the link and they should be checked to see if the site went down or shut off the link.

I think it may depend on the actual content. If the SEO is good, why not?
