Default Google offering Free Wi-Fi in the US.??

Yesterday, Google made a proposal to the Federal Communications Commission to free up unused TV broadcast channels known as "white space". The plan? Utilize this bandwidth for a high speed wireless internet network that can propagate long distances and through obstacles. Google engineers have called the offering "Wi-Fi on Steroids".

The white space Google is talking about is part of the TV spectrum that offers extra room for channels 2 to 51. When digital TV becomes mandated in the U.S. (after Feb 2009) this extra space will be no longer needed and Google is suggesting that it be used to build a hi speed wireless network.

In the FCC submission, Google outlines some processes and tests to avoid interference on the frequencies and offers free tech support for people using their Wi-Fi. This submission coincides well with Google mobile android handsets which are due out later this year.

While the plan for free wireless internet would surely increase Google usage in the U.S., there are some other implications that need to be considered. For example, Marketing Pilgrim points outthat as an ISP, Google would control a huge amount of personal information which could be integrated to influence search results.

Business owners should keep their eyes on this one, as free wireless internet for all = the need for an advanced internet marketing strategy.

Now is that interesting or what??

I think that we will see more goodies from them this year in a fight for users against MSN and the new MSN/Yahoo when it happens!!

Its very interesting but a bit concerned about Google's every rising power, if they manage to grab the so called "white space" I can see them slapping adsense on it :)

I totally agree with that one Temi.

Watch out for the White Space!!

Of course, Adsense is pretty much DEAD until they figure out a better way to capture people's interest, and the video ads will NOT do it in my opinion.

Well, they are using all sorts of stuff to keep it relevant, for example, some just posted this at my forum :
Demographic bidding now available on selected sites in the Google content network
You can bid more for preferred demographic groups or exclude users of a certain age or gender from seeing your ads.

Stuff like this is bound to help make Adsense more powerful and extend its lead over potential rival like YPN which is even yet to roll out beyond US.

I do give a lot of credit to Google but at the sometime, I am concerned they will ultimately abuse their dominant position which is extending beyond the web int TV etc

I also agree with that!

My opinion is that people that attach thereselves to Google though or any other demographic searches from the other engines as they come will DIE as far as SERP coverage!

If you are a local business of some sort it will be great!

Bottom Line: If you are trying to keep your traffic up for World coverage....Stay Totally Organtic!

The think is that there are loads of people with money to burn.... I have an SEO client at the moment, he is happy with the traffic and position I got him to through organic results but because his competition are using Adwords, he is spending a few hundreds on adwords per day.
I wish I was charging him that much for the organics I am generating for him :(

If he is focusing on a local market, then the Adsense will help him stay up with the buddies..(competition)

You already know that though Temi. I am not trying to teach here because you are very well in tune with SEO! I am just trying to open this discussion for the other members to have a gander at!

Money to burn is cool but as you well know, Google's Adsense program seperates you from the organtic and has NO benefit whatsoever for Organtic results, and like me, i think that the Adsense might hinder the Organtic results but that is not Confirmed.

A very good subject to play Point - Counterpoint with I think!

Thanks!
