Default This way illegal?

If I register a famous website's domain name in my country's ccTLD. Is this still illegal? Can they sue me for that and take the domain away?

it depends how you use it I think.

if you have anything to do with their site on yours, I think they can.

Well It depends on you have registered it after the company has gotten its trade mark or before. Also the purpose you are using the domain matters too.

Not sure it depends on your countrys laws. In USA this would be illegal as you are not using the domain for meaningful purposes other than to get money from a Registered Trademark.

I would still go ahead and register it, then put something not related to the main site on it.

Chances are, they'll come and buy the site from you for decent cash.

All in all, there are two basic points:
1. Country (which is the country? Does it has laws for that?)
2. The contain of the site (For example, for sure you will have some troubles if you have p#rno web-site of the name of a country! It is a jeer!)

In my view point, registering a domain that can be protected somehow, is not a good idea. Most of the time, people do not win from that

If you are trying to copy them, you will be sued. However if you have a totally different site with some extension for the name then you are saved and would probably get a lump sum for it. Thats what some guy in Poland did. He created a .pl and sold it to at some reported 78k$

I think if they are trademarked, then you cant, otherwise you would have a law suit against you. If they aren't trademarked, then register it now! :)

I've heard its illegal!
in my country, one person registered the domain jkrowling.ir and then j.k. Rowling sued him, and claimed about 50 thousands dollars for it as I've heard.
but it depends sometimes that they don't sue!

Oh my gosh. They sued her for using her own name ? That is insane, why can people use their own names if company has it? Well i'm realy confused but i think i know why. Just don't know how to explain. :o

Well, I should mention that jkrowling.ir was a fan site of her!

I guess it depends on what you do with your website. I remember using the domain name barbie for porn will net you a lawsuit from Mattel.
