Starting a new forum can be hard, especially when the niche of your forum is highly competitive. Even existing forums can have troubles competing with the dominating forums of their specific niche. Also most forums won't allow you to link to competing forums in any way, shape or form, thus creating a monopoly where the little guy gets cornered down at the bottom of the barrel.
