Exclamation Does Google look at dates of links?

I couldn't think how to phrase the question.

Does Google look at dates of links?
-
What I mean is, are 'old' links as valuable as 'new' links?

Having built up several thousand links to my guitar store over the past 6 months, can I rest on my laurels? i.e. will those links be as powerful in SERPS terms in a year's time as they are now, or does Google downgrade their value over time. Will a thousand 3-year-old links give the same SERPS as a thousand 3-month-old links?

I guess I'm asking about 'currency' - do links have to be current to be most valuable? I've never seen this mentioned, but have a gut feeling that the fact that someone linked to your site 3 years ago would not be regarded as highly as someone linking to your site last week.

Any thoughts??
